The Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority (PEIRA) has issued a clear directive for private schools regarding annual fee increases. This decision aims to protect parents from excessive fee hikes and to ensure fairness in private education. The announcement came after a formal meeting between PEIRA officials and representatives of private schools in Islamabad.
Maximum Allowed Fee Increase
According to Acting PEIRA Chairman Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah, private schools are allowed to increase their annual fees by up to 5 percent only. This increase applies under normal circumstances and must be followed by all registered private schools. The authority has made it clear that schools cannot exceed this limit without proper approval.
Special Cases And Additional Increase
In certain special cases, schools may request an additional fee increase of up to 3 percent. However, this extra increase is not automatic. Schools must provide valid reasons along with audited financial records to justify the need. Even in such cases, the total increase cannot exceed 8 percent under any condition.

Free Education For Needy Students
PEIRA has also directed private schools to provide free education to at least 10 percent of students from financially weak backgrounds. Special priority should be given to the children of martyrs. This step is intended to promote equal educational opportunities and social responsibility among private institutions.
Enforcement And Action Against Violations
The authority has warned that strict action will be taken against schools that violate the fee policy. Parents are encouraged to report any illegal fee increases to PEIRA. In addition, PEIRA plans to take action against unregistered private schools operating in Islamabad. Currently, around 1,500 schools are registered, while many continue to operate without approval.
Reason Behind The Decision
This directive was issued after concerns were raised by the National Assembly and Senate standing committees about unfair and excessive fee increases. The new policy ensures transparency, accountability, and relief for parents facing rising education costs.
