Sindh Govt Replaces ‘Numbers System’ With Grading In All Education Boards

The Sindh government has officially decided to replace the old marks or numbers system with a new grading system in all education boards of the province. This important step has been taken to enhance the examination system and align it with modern and international standards. The decision has been formally approved, and its implementation will begin in phases. According to the provincial authorities, this change will help reduce unhealthy competition among students and encourage genuine learning, rather than focusing solely on marks.

Reason Behind Ending The Numbers System

For many years, students were judged only by the total marks they scored. This often created pressure and stress among students and parents. The new grading system aims to provide a fairer and more balanced way to measure student performance. The decision was taken in light of policy guidelines issued by the Inter Board Coordination Commission (IBCC) at the federal level. One major goal is to create uniformity among all education boards across the country so that students from different boards are evaluated on the same standard.

Minimum Passing Marks And U Grade Rule

Under the new system, the minimum passing marks have been set at 40 percent. Any student who scores less than 40 percent in any paper will be given a “U” grade, which means ungraded or failed. However, such students will not be left behind completely. They will be allowed to reappear in the same paper to improve their result. This policy gives students a fair second chance to correct their mistakes and perform better.

Phased Implementation Plan

The grading system will not be introduced all at once. Instead, it will be implemented in phases across the province. It will start with the first annual examinations of Class 9 and Class 11 (SSC-I and HSSC-I) in the year 2026. After that, it will be applied to the annual examinations of Class 10 and Class 12 (SSC-II and HSSC-II) in 2027. This gradual approach will help students, teachers, and boards adjust smoothly to the new system.

Official Grading Structure

Instead of marks, students’ performance will now be shown through grades based on percentage ranges. The approved grading structure is given below:

GradePercentage Range
A++96% – 100%
A+91% – 95%
A86% – 90%
B++81% – 85%
B+76% – 80%
B71% – 75%
C+61% – 70%
C51% – 60%
D40% – 50%
UBelow 40% (Fail)

This grading scale clearly shows how student performance will be categorized in the future.

Future Plans And Final Approval

The provincial education minister, Ismail Rahu, confirmed that the Sindh government has formally approved this new policy. He also shared that after full implementation of the grading system, a GPA (Grade Point Average) system will be introduced in the future. This will further modernize the examination process and help align it with international education practices. Overall, this reform is expected to create a healthier academic environment and promote better learning outcomes for students across Sindh.
